Ooh la ‘La Cage’

ST. LOUIS — “La Cage aux Folles” turns up the glitz at the Fabulous Fox.

“La Cage aux Folles,” based on the 1973 French play of the same name, tells the story of Georges, the owner of a glitzy nightclub in lovely Saint-Tropez, and his family. many people remember the story as retold in the Robin Williams/Gene Hackman 1996 movie, “The Birdcage,” which followed a 1978 French-Italian film adaptation of the same name.

The musical, which recently made Tony Award history as first show ever to win a Tony three times for best production, opens Tuesday for 16 performances at the Fox Theatre through Jan. 15.

Missouri native Dale Hensley, who plays stage manager Francis, does a small but memorable comedic role in the musical and sees the production as a commentary on family, not just a farce. Hensley, originally from the Midwest, where he graduated from Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., went to college with actors John Goodman (“Roseanne”) and Kathleen Turner (“The War of the Roses”).

Hensley did “La Cage aux Folles’” 10th anniversary tour in 1993, its Broadway revival in 2005 and its most recent revival last year, playing both lead roles at one time or another on Broadway, as well as understudying both of those roles. this year makes Hensley’s fourth time performing in “La Cage aux Folles.”

The classic musical comedy by Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein originally won six Tony Awards in 1984, including Best Musical. the 2005 Broadway revival won two Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical.

The new, freshly reconceived 2010 “La Cage” won three Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Director of a Musical for Terry Johnson.

“The last revival’s average audience members were middle America people who love this show,” he said.

The parents central to the main family in “La Cage aux Folles” happen to be two men who have a son who is bringing his fiancee and her ultra-conservative parents to meet his non-traditional family.

“It’s dealing with issues that could be considered offensive, yet it’s handled so beautifully, with so much love in this show, and it’s really about family,” Hensley said. “It’s really about anyone who has children who can identify with wanting what’s best for their children.”

Hensley, as understudy to lead role Albin, played by Broadway veteran and Tony Award-winner Christopher Sieber, who is Georges’ partner, acted opposite famously tanned actor George Hamilton, who plays Georges.

“He’s the nicest man I’ve ever worked with, so nice, so kind, no ego whatsoever,” Hensley said about Hamilton, who has done theater his whole career but who most people know from the movies. “He’s generous and kind, such a class act. No one can tell a story like that man. He’s just a pro.”

Hamilton appeared in the second season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” in 2005 but received accolades for his earlier movie roles. He was nominated for a Golden Globe as the campy neck-biter in the Dracula spoof, “Love at first Bite,” in 1979, which he executive-produced, and continued on the parody road successfully with “Zorro, the Gay Blade” in 1981.

He also is well-known by earlier generations for his MGM films in the 1960s, such as “Where the Boys are,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “Evel Knievel.”

“Francis is a fantastical part, and it’s always a treat to play one of those parts with great actors,” said Hensley, who also looks forward to once again playing the Fox, where he performed in “The full Monty” in 2003.

Mia Wasikowska – Mia Wasikowska To Front Miu Miu Campaign

Mia Wasikowska has replaced 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld as the face of Miu Miu.

Mia Wasikowska has replaced Hailee Steinfeld as the face of Miu Miu.

The ‘Jane Eyre’ actress is set to star in the spring/summer 2012 campaign for the Italian fashion brand and the promotional shots – taken in London in December – will show Mia wearing black eyeliner, red lipstick and showcasing the latest designs along with accessories and handbags.

Hailee, 14, was recruited by Miu Miu in May but quickly ran into controversy when an image from her campaign was removed over safety concerns.

The picture – taken by fashion photographer and film-maker Bruce Weber and showing the ‘True Grit’ actress sitting on a train track while wiping away a tear – was blasted by the Advertising Standards Authority as “irresponsible” because it depicts a child in an unsafe location.

However, Prada Retail UK – which owns the Miu Miu brand – defended the shot claiming it was “part of a serious, high-fashion campaign” and “based on the set of an imaginary film”.

Prada added it was clear that Hailee “could have easily moved from where she was sitting because she was not restrained in any way”, but the ASA ruled that the railway setting was “irresponsible” considering her age.

Promotional Tote Bag – Go Green With Eco Friendly Tote Bags

You’ve probably heard the hype, “Go Green. go green. use solar energy. reduce water use.” Am I right? How are you supposed to know the right direction to take your company? Maybe you’ve taken a few steps towards going green in your business already. It’s time to tell your customers about your progress. Make sure that your customers know you’re going green by putting your logo on an eco friendly shopping bag.

A promotional tote bag is something that everyone uses. How many green bags do you have in your home? Eco friendly tote bags will help you build your company awareness because people will use these promotional giveaways at home and at work. Your customers will see your logo constantly. If you’re not giving away a promotional tote bag that is eco friendly, your competition probably is.

There are a few good reasons why you want to give away green tote bags. First of all, your customers need to know that you’re going green. Customers feel better about themselves when they purchase their products from a company that is being environmentally friendly. Whether or not your customers are completely passionate about the environment, they will feel good about purchasing from you when you let them know about your green involvement.

Secondly, you will be giving your company great exposure. Your logo will be seen by your customer at least a few times a month or as often as they use the bag. Also, when your customer uses the bag, all the people at the store will also see your imprinted message. So, there really is no way to know how many people will read your advertisement. These bags basically become mobile billboards. Where else can you get a billboard for less than the price of breakfast at Mickey D’s?

Lastly, by giving promotional tote bags to your customers, you will be promoting an eco friendly lifestyle, which looks great for your company’s branding. You are encouraging people to reduce their use of plastic bags by reusing the bag you gave them. You can even further that by making sure that they recycle the bag once it is beyond the point of using.

Promoting your business with an eco friendly tote bag has benefits that are countless. It is a great opportunity for you to tell your customers about your green changes, expose your company, and make a difference for the environment. Your customers will feel great about using your company and they will thank you for making a difference.

While she is seen topless (with the nipples covered up) in the latest issue of UK Esquire magazine, Irina Shayk has vowed that she will not be posing for Playboy anytime soon.

“I would never do Playboy. Yes, I am a lingerie model, but I have class. Playboy offered me so much money last year. I was like: ‘no. way.’

If you remember, back to December 2010 when Shayk, Cristiano Ronaldo‘s girlfriend, went to war with Spanish GQ magazine accusing them of airbrushing off her underwear to boast they had pictures of “the most beautiful creature in the world nude”.

Shayk maintains she kept her kept her underwear on for the duration of the shoot and was said to be considering legal action against the magazine for breaching her photo approval contract.

However, GQ states, “we have the contract, more than 15 witnesses who saw that Irina agreed to undress for the session, we have the original naked photos of Irina … What other evidence is needed? the facts, witnesses, original documents, photos … Why lie for lying?”

Who do you believe, Irina or GQ? Sound off by tweeting us at @socialitelife or posting to our Facebook page.

When Exactly Should I be Wearing Sunglasses?

Sunglasses play an important role in protecting your eyes from potentially harmful UV rays. this invisible form of energy takes the form of radiation which can damage your eyes if they are overexposed. But the pertinent question is, how much protection do I need? or stated differently, when exactly should I be wearing sunglasses?

One of the major determinants about deciding whether a particular situation calls for the use of sunglasses is the environment in which you are in. rather surprisingly, UV exposure is greater on the snow, as well as on sand, pavement and water, than in more green environments. we often imagine a park at high noon to be some of the most dangerous conditions for UV exposure. But in fact, environments in which your surroundings are reflective, such as snow and water, provide some of the most perilous situations. this is because in such situations, the amount of UV is not easily absorbed by the greenery around you, but rather hits the ground and is reflected back up towards your eyes. this means that you have UV light approaching your eyes both from above and from below.

Another dangerous situation, in which you should always be careful to wear sunglasses, is when you are at high altitudes. UV rays are filtered out in the atmosphere. this essentially means that the gasses between you and the sun which are trapped within the earths gravitational pull filter out ultraviolet light before it reaches your eyes. in high altitudes, however, the concentration of those filtering gases, as well as their thickness, is significantly reduced. as a result, light rays are significantly stronger, and thus the presence of UV is much greater at higher altitudes.

Time of day, is of course, also one of the greatest determinants of UV risk. UV rays are directed from the sun. as a result, it should seem obvious that the risk of UV exposure is greatest when the sun is strongest, during the hours between 10am and 4pm. At these times the UV rays are more direct and as a result their effects on your eyes are significantly stronger. Consequently, it is key during these periods to take necessary precaution and wear sunglasses when outside.

Weather is another often overlooked factor when determining whether or not to wear sunglasses. it seems intuitive that if the sun is out, then UV rays are stronger, and as a corollary, if the day is overcast the risk of UV exposure is virtually nil. this is not the case however. rather, UV rays quite easily permeate clouds, rain, and the like. this means that an overcast day is no indication that UV rays are any less intense on that day. by contrast, it is often more important to be contentious about wearing sunglasses during such days as we are often not cognizant of the UV risks we are facing and may take risks with our eyes as a result.

After learning about the dangers of UV radiation exposure to your eyes the question becomes, not if I should be wearing sunglasses, but rather when should I be wearing sunglasses?

When Exactly Should I be Wearing Sunglasses?

Bright colors will be the most popular: pinks, red, oranges, purples and yellows in all sizes, but the big bag still shines as a roomy favorite. Many feature chains and showy hardware. Smaller, more classic handbags were present, and clutches also provided a fresh look for any ensemble regardless of the size of bag, many were shown clasped in the hand, not slung over the shoulder, for a more elegant look.

Fashion Police or Racial Profiling?

Just as I thought the New Year was off to a decidedly joyous start, a strange thing happened on the way from Whole Foods. There I was walking along posh Fifth Avenue in New York City after having braved the elements on one of the coldest nights to date. I was feeling quite pleased with myself after taking the long trek through Central Park to the Whole Food’s Wine Store which is inconveniently located on the other side of town. With my impending journey in mind, I bundled up chicly and warmly for the occasion as well as selected the appropriate catwalk playlist for my adventure. all seemed to be right in the universe. I must say there is still something within most of us that leaves one with some strange sense of accomplishment whenever we chose to meet Mother Nature on our own terms. on this adventurous evening, I was feeling much less like Holly Golightly and channeling a more modern-day John Wayne meets Annie Oakley kind of vibe. however,There are many fake cheappaneraiwatcheswholesale that can cheat your money or sell fake branded watches. these feelings of accomplishment and transformation would be short lived.Market wholesalereplicahandbags feedback Forum Talk. As I returned from my shopping expedition and began making my way out of the park along Fifth Avenue towards the old homestead, there they were. Flashing lights, pomp and circumstance, the whole nine yards — New York’s finest waiting to greet yours truly.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Manhattan, Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side is perhaps the most expensive strip of land in the entire United States — if not the world. and no, I don’t live on Fifth Avenue (yet), but I often take this route home to my humble abode located on Park Avenue in East Harlem dreaming of the day.

But on this particular evening all my day dreaming came to a screeching halt. for some strange and unapparent reason, I was being blinded by flashing red, blue and hot white lights. it was all a little surreal as I had never realized before this moment how bright the lights are on top of police cars. I must admit, there is something quite intoxicating about them until one realizes they are pointed in your direction.

Before I had a chance to adjust the volume on Adele’s “Set fire to the Rain” which, by the way, is the perfect beat for a Naomi Campbell meets Gisele Bündchen style saunter, I realized the officer was gesturing towards my broken shopping bag. did I fail to mention that on my walk home through the treacherous terrain of Central Park and while attempting to carry my Whole Foods’ bag as if I were carrying a classic Louis Vuitton Tote, the paper handles betrayed me and ripped? (Note to self: invest in one of those Feed Me burlap sacks from the Bush girl. The reliable Aquatimer leatherhandbags.) so like any fashionista worth his or her salt, my imaginary LV tote was transformed into an oversized Fendi Baguette and securely clutched under my armpit for the remainder of my strut, I mean walk, home.

So there I was — “strut interrupted” and being pulled over by the NYPD’s Fashion Police. Luckily I’ve seen enough marathons of COPS to know exactly what was going on here. therefore in order to avoid making any sudden moves, I slowly pulled out my earplugs without reaching for my shiny silver iPod. As I did this, the officer proceeded to walk cautiously towards me, and I could now clearly hear him ask in a somewhat aggressive tone,Find a christianhandbags Manufacturer and Supplier. “What’s inside the bag?” I must say there was something about the way he began scanning and examining my complete ensemble as he walked in my direction that I could tell he was reluctantly beginning to reassess the situation at hand. however, before my mouth could catch up with my brain, which is usually the case with yours truly, the following words came pouring out (verbatim). “Why are you stopping me? oh no, let me guess. you have a strange fetish for Tom Ford’s Yves Saint Laurent collection circa 2001?”

Please do not ask me why these choice words came out but this was the only thing I could think of to diffuse the situation. and apparently it was working. I immediately noticed the male Caucasian officer as well as his female partner begin to smile. But of course, the male officer was now intrigued as well as invested in his interrogation. “We got a report and are looking for a…” Before he could finish his sentence my inner John Wayne coupled with the ancestral rumblings of Sojourner Truth decided to possess my tongue. “Officer, unless you are looking for a black man wearing a leather trench coat and a maxi-skirt, carrying a broken Whole Foods’ bag containing two bottles of organic cabernet sauvignon, I suggest you leave me at my peace.” where were these words coming from? “if not, I am sure this would make for a great article in my Huffington Post column captioned, Fashionista Arrested — Strutting while Black.” to which he replied, “have a nice evening sir.” of course, I could not resist putting a proper period on our encounter, “you do the same Officer Friendly.” As I kicked the train of my cascading frock and turned to make my dramatic exit, I tried my very best not to give the young officer the satisfaction of noticing the sense of terror that had silently crept between each line of my sarcasm and biting wit.you can find all the burberryhandbags you need here.

As I made my way closer and closer to home and further away from the now tainted Fifth Avenue, I could feel every fiber of my being wanting to run. But I didn’t run. Instead, I decided to gather my nerves, cinch my waist and continue my strut. however, this time it was much more Giselle and a lot less Naomi — as we all know where Ms. Campbell’s hot temper has often landed her.

Madonna Badger's Friend Speaks Out: 'She is Not Alone' (Exclusive)

Currently executive vice president and creative director of the Vera Wang Group, Kessler-Sanders was accessories director at Vogue for six years, president of Miu Miu at Prada and VP of the accessories division at Donna Karan before her tenure at Vera Wang.

STORY: Madonna Badger: how the Tragedy Could Have been Averted

She spoke to The Hollywood Reporter exclusively, after she was given permission by the family to speak on their behalf.

"I met Madonna Badger in the early '90s, when we both worked at Calvin Klein," Kessler-Sanders tells THR. "I was in the press department, working with the late Carolyn Bessette [who became Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy]. Madonna was the art director, she conceived of the whole Marky Mark/Calvin Klein campaign, which is so iconic. It was an incredible time at the company. I think even Calvin Klein would say that. Narciso Rodriguez was on the design team. It was an amazing staff.

"Madonna and I stayed very close. I had her baby shower for her first daughter, Lily. We stayed very close throughout all of our mutual pregnancies. she had my baby shower for me when my son was born. she was the very first person who came to the hospital. Although, since she moved to Connecticut, we didn't see each other as much, we remained connected as old friends do."

Kessler-Sanders, of course, is grieving, along with all of Badger's friends, but she says they're all there with her.

STORY: Support Pages Pop up following Madonna Badger's Christmas Day Tragedy

"I don't even know how to describe to you how this is for me," she says. "for all her friends, it's almost inconceivable. But she has an amazing network of friends who have all shown up. that first day after the fire, we were all together. the children's father, Matthew Badger, is going through this in his own way, very privately. But there has been an enormous outpouring for Madonna. you can't possibly say anything to comfort a person in this time. you just have to be there and sit with her. be there so she knows she's not alone. she is being cared for by the right people, close friends. she is not alone."

Kessler-Sanders learned of the tragedy just before 7 a.m. on Sunday morning when a mutual friend called to tell her about it.

"I couldn't absorb it," she says. "But over the last couple days, you realize — it's epic. It's so awful. But here's what I know about Madonna Badger: she is the strongest woman I've ever known in my life, throughout our 20-year friendship. I could not handle this myself. But she will find a way to do good things in her life because of this. It will take time, obviously."

soccer-stories » MLS SuperDraft 2012: And the First Overall Pick is…!

The MLS SuperDraft; a day to make or break a young player’s career… In Major League Soccer, at least. Thirty-eight players, one of whom was not in the combine due to national team duties, were selected by the nineteen MLS teams. the remaining players from the MLS Combine will be available for the Supplemental draft  Jan. 17.

But enough talk about that! what about what happened today? First off, Andrew Wenger, the forfender from Duke, was chosen by the newest expansion side, the Montréal Impact. Or if you want to be all French about it, le Impact Montréal. Wenger’s name has been floating around a lot recently, especially with the national teams. Instead of attending the combine, he went to the USMNT U-23 camp. but even without the combine, he’s had plenty exposure with Duke, having scored 17 goals and 8 assists. and with his versatility with positions, Wenger is definitely worthy of the first selection. Wenger is also likely to be the interest of foreign clubs one day, much like previous SuperDraft first picks. Good luck, Andrew!

As for the rest of the draft, there were just about as many brow raisers as there were nods of “that was an expected moved”. the likes of Darren Mattocks (21 goals and 4 assists), Kelyn Rowe (6 goals and 10 assists), Luis Silva (17 goals and 10 assists), and Casey Townsend (17 goals and 2 assists) were all taken within the first five picks. All these moves fall into the “yes, that was expected” category. what was not was Chandler Hoffman being chosen by the Philadelphia Union as the 13th pick. Hoffman had a wonderful combine and many people were expecting him to be picked up in the first five. though he was not chosen until later in the first round, he’s going to a fine team in Philadelphia and will hopefully shine there… if he is able to break into the eighteen, of course.

The eyebrow raising continued as Seattle chose defender Andrew Duran. Almost totally out of the blue, the decision to sign Duran over Dom Dwyer (who was chosen by Kansas City right afterward) or any other of the Generation Adidas players left for the picking made this writer’s twitter feed explode. To me, it seems very much like the Sounders to pick a player not on any other team’s priority list. further confusion about the choice was cleared up when Andrew spoke to the media about having attended Sounders’ practice over the summer. Andrew is very versatile defender and will add depth to the entire back line.

Another name that stuck out was Aubrey Perry. Maybe that is because while watching the combine, Simon Borg kept referring to him as “Aubrey Perry of South Florida”, which will forever ring in my ears. Or maybe his name sticks out because he is a very solid performance in the combine at right back. either way, I believe the Columbus Crew made a good choice in choosing him as their first pick in the second round (26th overall). but in all honesty, I was surprised he didn’t go sooner. he might have been a little rough around the edges at the beginning of the combine, but I thought he was one of the more steady defenders.

A total of nine forwards, fourteen midfielders, twelve defenders, and two goalkeepers were taken in the draft. this list does not include Wenger, who plays at multiple positions. it is also worthy to note that no international players were selected.

Remember! LA, Toronto, and Seattle will kick off their first games March 7th while the rest of the league follows March 10th and the following weekends. also, MLS teams are to begin preseason training Jan. 15. the season is just around the corner!

George Clooney on Wrestling with Stacy Keibler at National Board of Review Awards Gala – Parties etc – FashionEtc.com

As George Clooney, named best actor at the National Board of Review Awards gala on January 10, strolled the red carpet with his love interest Stacy Keibler, we had a very pressing question: Can the silver fox hold his own on the dance floor with the former Dancing with the Stars contestant?

“Well she leads, which really throws me,” The Descendants star said. and Clooney added that he hasn’t picked up any dance moves from Keibler, which gave rise to another question: Has Keibler, a former pro wrestler, taught him to, uh, tussle on the mat? “No she hasn’t,” Clooney laughed to FashionEtc, flashing that million-dollar smile.

Fellow honoree Tilda Swinton, who took the best actress award for We need to Talk about Kevin, was also in a joking mood. “Ha! I was about to say I am wearing Haider Ackerman, but I’m not wearing Haider Ackermann, I’m wearing something that he made,” she said when asked about her ensemble. “I am wearing a shirt and trousers by Haider Ackermann,” Swinton clarified.

And while Swinton is always adventurous with fashion, we noted some interesting looks at the black-tie gala, particularly on some of the younger actresses.

The radiant Jessica Chastain chose a knee-length Zac Posen in black with floral embroidery. Gleaming ruby Harry Winston earrings set off her strawberry hair.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Shailene Woodley, who landed the supporting actress trophy for her performance as Clooney’s teenage daughter in the Descendants, looked sophisticated, yet age-appropriate in knee-length L’Wren Scott with minimal makeup and jewelry.

The sensible Woodley explained that borrowing dresses is good for the environment. “The nice thing about borrowing from big designers is that many people wear the same dress, so you’re actually reusing and recycling dresses,” she said. (But seriously, she should keep that dress!)

Chloe Moretz, star of Hugo, which won best picture, was in head-to-toe Miu Miu at the gala. One of FashionEtc’s most stylish teens, the budding fashion plate is enjoying the designer attention that goes along with awards season.

“Chanel just gave me my first two Chanel purses ever, and at 14, that’s a big feat!” Moretz said, beaming.

The gala, at NYC’s Cipriani 42nd Street, was teeming with stars; Martin Scorsese, Helen Mirren, Sally Field, Keira Knightley, Emma Stone, Jeremy Irons, Daniel Radcliffe, Naomi Watts and Viola Davis were just some of the Hollywood luminaries at the dinner.

The acceptance speeches were often a tad, uh, lengthy, let’s say, and less-than-titillating, but occasionally someone got the crowd chuckling, particularly Rosie O’Donnell, who basically did a stand-up comedy routine when presenting an award for a documentary film.

“I’m happy to be here at the National Board of Review,” O’Donnell said. “They’re much better than National Society of Film Critics, and we know this because today they announced their best film: Melancholia. if I had the choice between giving birth to a flaming child on the floor of an igloo or watching that film again, I would choose the birth of my child.”

Rosie noted that Melancholia’s director, Lars von Trier, was not present at the gala. “He’s in Denmark. F**k it, I don’t know where that country is,” she added. “I’ll never work for him, or Woody Allen. Pedophile? Who’s to say?”

The talk show host also took shots at the desserts served during dinner, at an audience member or two, and at herself. “This tablecloth I’m wearing cost $5,000,” she cracked, referring to her dress.

When the laughter finally died down, emcee Natalie Morales acknowledged that O’Donnell had broken the tedium of the evening’s endless stream of dull speeches. “Thank god for Rosie O’Donnell, right?” Morales told the audience.

How much would it be to send a bag to Ireland (Dublin) from Post Office?

I don't know how much it weighs, it's a slightly heavier than normal bag, think large rucksack weight? Is anyone up for giving me a guesstimate? (You can tell me to get it weighed all you like, i'm just wondering if anyone would know ish)I'm near Birmingham UK by the wayI had a look at www.royalmail.com, and could find prices for packets, but not for parcels. There used to be this information before. A year or so ago, I sent a keyboard (big long box, weight 12 kg) from UK to Ireland. Postage cost about 15. It arrived within a week. I was told at the time that there is no surface mail to Ireland, it all goes by air.If you weigh the bag, and note measurements, a phone call to your post office will give you an exact price.

Austin City Limits Bag Ban Consideration is Music to the Ears of T.C.E.

(PRWEB) October 22, 2011

Paper or plastic is a question that may not be asked again soon in Austin, Texas. The Texas Campaign for the Environment is applauding the consideration as both a common sense forward thinking solution for the environment and sound fiscal policy. The recent consideration of plastic bag bans in Austin is a trend continuing in Texas with Brownsville being the latest example earlier this year. TEC along with other environmental activist groups and government are finding common ground with the taxpayer savings in clean-up efforts and city image.

The City of Austin has scheduled a Town Hall forum on October 24th, 2011, at 6 PM at Austin Energy located at 721 Barton Springs Rd. One of the major topics to be covered is the banning of single use bags. Mayor of Austin, Lee Leffingwell, will be in attendance with members of the Texas Campaign for the Environment (TCE) and members from Austins Resource Recovery Department (ARRD). The public is encouraged to attend to show support of the single use plastic and paper bag ban. The next City Council meeting, which the public is also encouraged to attend, will be held the second Wednesday of November, with a vote for the ordinance to be held in December.

We spoke to Robin Schneider, Executive Director at The Texas Campaign for the Environment, a non-profit organization, to discuss what their major goals of the October 24th Town Hall forum will be. Robin stated that “We would like to see the ban of single-use bags, plastic and paper, to move forward in Austin to save the taxpayers the expense of bag pollution cleanup. Taxing citizens for plastic bag clean up does not ultimately solve the issue of the environmental impacts of plastic bags in our water ways and overflowing landfills. We would like the inclusion of paper bags in the ban as paper bag processing uses far more energy and produces much more in emissions. Paper bags also cost more than plastic bags. The best solution is for consumers to use reusable shopping bags.”

Austins Resource Recovery Department has released a report showing that, “The impact of plastic bags on residents costs tax payers $850,000.00 in plastic bag clean up from waterways, waste water systems and sewage systems each year. Further, machinery systems at recycling facilities become clogged and operations halt when plastic bags become entangled, costing time and money. There are also costs to land fill operators who have problems controlling airborne plastic bags.”

According to a report released by The Texas Campaign for the Environment, retailers purchased 3,454,522 pounds of plastic bags from January 2008 through June 2009 but only recycled 915,882 pounds of plastic during the same time frame. Less than 27% of the plastic bags from the participating retailers were recycled by the retailers. The overall use of recycled shopping bags and “multi-use” organic bags continues to increase nationwide as more and more cities recognize more than just the eco-friendly benefits

In early 2011, Brownsville, Texas was the first city in Texas to pass a plastic and paper bag ban. Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell is looking at Brownsvilles model as an example. Brownsvilles ordinance includes paper bags in its ban and is saving an estimated 375,000 bags a day. According to Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez, “The ordinance was a good thing to implement. There would be people that think it is inconvenient, but people adapt in one way or another”, he said.

The Austin City Council has scheduled a Town Hall forum on October 24th, 2011, at 6 PM at Austin Energy located at 721 Barton Springs Road in Austin, Texas. TCE and ARRD welcome and encourage your support and attendance. If you cannot attend the meeting on October, 24th, you can also send an email to Mayor Lee Leffingwell asking for the inclusion of paper bags to be in the single use bag ban at http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/council/groupemail.htm . Voice your desire to move towards the use of eco friendly reusable shopping bags and help Austin city limits go green.
